Imprisoned

Too often, people believe drug addiction is a choice. It is not.

Not one person I spoke with wanted to be addicted. It is a circle of hell no one would choose.

Artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg interviewing a man suffering from addiction

I recorded my interviewees describing the actual urge to use. One woman described addiction as "tricking you into thinking you didn't have it." It was fascinating how their descriptions echoed the same themes. They reach a crescendo in Imprisoned, my audio installation, a symphony of sixty-four individual voices describing the power, the imprisonment, of addiction.
