Overarching Statement
My microscript drawing series began with After Cadmus. I had just learned how to draw and wanted to add content to line and form. This technique of drawing with words allows me to incorporate the intent of the original masterwork with the content of the text in which it is rendered. Commentary bubbles up from the intersection of the two realities.

UnPresidented
In 1895, Edvard Munch created his iconic pastel painting, The Scream. This re-imagining of it is drawn using Donald Trump quotations. The railings and sidewalk provide a timeline in which the horror of the Covid-19 pandemic slowly unfolds.

After Cadmus Series
Paul Cadmus, one of the twentieth century’s greatest figurative artists, gained renown for his paintings, but also produced masterful nude drawings, the model for which was often his partner of thirty years, Jon Andersson. Cadmus died in 1999, just a few years after enactment of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

After Cadmus
After Cadmus is the reimagining of one of his drawings, but rather than a line drawing, it is composed from the words of the Writ of Certiorari and the transcript of oral arguments before the United States Supreme Court in the case of United States v. Windsor, 133 S. Ct. 2675 (2013) which successfully sought the repeal of Section 3 of DOMA.

After Cadmus II
After Cadmus II is the reimagining of one of his female nudes, but rather than a line drawing, it is composed from the words of the United States Supreme Court opinion handed down in the case of United States v. Windsor, 133 S. Ct. 2675 (2013) which successfully sought the repeal of Section 3 of DOMA.
This companion piece, again a re-creation of a Cadmus drawing, is realized using the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Windsor case.
